TORONTO, August 25, 2026 – York Regional Police announced on August 25 that a fatal collision occurred in Newmarket the previous evening. A 64-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street and died at the scene.
The collision happened at around 7:20 p.m. on August 24 at the intersection of Davis Drive and Parkside Drive. Police said the woman was crossing the road when she was hit by a vehicle. Emergency crews arrived and attempted life-saving measures, but the woman died at the scene from her injuries.
The driver involved remained at the scene and was not injured. Police have not released the driver’s identity and have not announced any charges at this time. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
York Regional Police’s Major Collision Investigation Unit is now looking for witnesses. Investigators are also asking drivers who were in the area before or after the collision and have dashcam footage to provide video that may help police reconstruct what happened.
According to York Regional Police’s latest annual statistics, 17,659 motor vehicle collisions were reported across York Region in 2025, a slight increase from 17,430 in 2024. Of those, 3,295 involved injuries, and 31 people died in traffic collisions during the year.
Road safety has also been a key focus for York Region in recent years. The Region is currently implementing its Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan, which aims to reduce serious collisions causing death or serious injury by 10 per cent over five years. In 2025, York Region completed 20 road safety improvement projects and plans to move forward with another 25 this year, including intersection upgrades, school zone safety measures and other improvements for pedestrians and drivers.
Davis Drive itself is also a major road in Newmarket with heavy traffic. This year, York Region has been carrying out traffic infrastructure improvements on parts of Davis Drive, including signal upgrades and accessibility improvements, to respond to growing traffic demand.
Police are still investigating the collision and have not released further information about the vehicle’s movement or the cause of the crash.
