Toronto, February 15 — To mark its 40th anniversary, the Chinese Consulate-General in Toronto hosted an Open Day event under the theme “40 Years of Growth, Youthful Aspiration.” Over 100 local students attended, making it a vibrant occasion of cultural exchange and friendship.
The event began with an opening speech by Consul General Luo Weidong, who reflected on the comprehensive development of China-Canada relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1970. He highlighted the Consulate’s mission since its founding in 1984: to promote friendship and cooperation between the two nations. “Young people are the driving force of people-to-people friendships,” he said. “The future of China-Canada relations lies in your hands.”
Consul General Luo also underscored the importance of youth exchanges in the current stage of China-Canada relations. “Today’s China is embracing the world with greater openness,” he remarked. “I hope more young Canadians seize the opportunity to walk alongside China, pursue their dreams, and create a better future together.”
Attendees viewed a documentary commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Consulate, revisiting significant milestones in China-Canada cooperation and celebrating the achievements of local exchanges. Canadian guest Wen Meilan shared her personal story, recounting her enduring bond with China. Meanwhile, young diplomats from the Consulate provided a glimpse into their daily work, highlighting the dedication and effort behind the scenes of diplomacy.
The Open Day featured a variety of activities, including interactive quizzes, cultural performances, and a communal meal. The Chinese Culture Experience Zone proved especially popular, as students participated in calligraphy, dough figurine crafting, and paper cutting. Visitors also explored the Consulate’s historical exhibits and consular service areas, gaining deeper insights into Chinese culture and diplomacy. Performances such as Sichuan opera face-changing, pipa (Chinese lute) music, and traditional Chinese opera captivated the audience, showcasing the richness of Chinese culture and enhancing the spirit of exchange.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chinese Consulate-General in Toronto. In his remarks, Consul General Luo said, “As we enter the 40th year, the Consulate remains committed to maintaining its resolve and vitality. Together with people from all sectors, we will continue to safeguard China-Canada friendship and nurture the flower of cooperation.”
Despite the chilly weather outside, the atmosphere within the Consulate was warm and welcoming.
