Chinese Media Roundtable on Employment The Liberal Party is not working hard for the next generation

Toronto, Ontario – August 8, 2025, Shadow Minister Employment of the Conservative Party MP. Garnett Genuis participated in the Chinese media round table, hosted by Canadian Chinese Conservative Alliance, on the theme of employment. MP Sandra Cobena and MP Costas Menegakis also attended the meeting.

First of all, MP Garnett Genuis issued a statement on the latest Labour Force Survey (LFS), saying:

  • Because Carney failed to restart our economy, young Canadians are sinking,  a heavy blow. This was confirmed in the Labor Force Survey in July. The report shows that the employment rate of young people has fallen to the lowest point in 25 years. Last month alone, there was 34,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 lost their jobs, and the youth unemployment rate rose to 14.6%.
  • At the same time, the unemployment rate of young people who plan to return to school has risen to 17.5%. Once, the first summer job provided valuable experience for young people and laid the foundation for their future. Only this summer, students are facing an economic obstacle.
  • The employment opportunities for all Canadian citizens are not much better. 1.6 million people across the country are in 23.8% of them – nearly 400,000 – have been looking for more than two jobs in a consecutive year. This is the highest proportion of long-term unemployed since February 1998 (except during the pandemic).
  • As the unemployment rate continues to rise, 41,000 Canadians lost jobs in July alone, and almost all unemployment is concentrated in young people and the private sector. The only industry growth is in the public sector. At present, in Ontario, one in five employees is Public officials.
  • The Liberal Party’s plan won’t work, especially for our young people. Canadians need a real plan to unleash our economic potential, create jobs, and for the next generation bring a better future.

Next, MPs answered questions about employment. When referring to the reasons for the serious decline in employment, they pointed out that the Liberal Party is holding back the economy, resulting in a decline in employment opportunities, and second, immigration policies were not aligned with the Canadian labor market. And regarding how to deal with the employment difficulty, they suggested that young people should plan and prepare early, even at the beginning of their academic career.

As a summary, MP Garnett Genuis stressed that “The plan of the Liberal Party will not work, especially for our young people. Canadians need a real plan from our Government to unleash our economic potential, create jobs, and bring a better future to the next generation.(LJI by Rudy)
