TORONTO, August 14, 2026 – Toronto police have released new information in a homicide investigation nearly four years after a man was shot and killed in Scarborough. In an update issued on the morning of August 14, police said the suspect in the killing of 31-year-old Ding Ping Wang may use the name “Jay,” and investigators now believe he may also be connected to another shooting that later occurred in the same parking lot.
The homicide happened on the evening of November 12, 2022. Wang was sitting inside a vehicle in a commercial plaza parking lot near Midland Avenue and Passmore Avenue when a man approached the vehicle and shot him. Wang suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.
Police previously said Wang was not involved in gangs or criminal activity and was not living what police would consider a high-risk criminal lifestyle. Investigators believe the shooting was not random, but a targeted attack. However, the specific motive has still not been confirmed.
For a long period after the killing, the investigation appeared to stall, and police had not publicly identified a clear suspect.
That changed in late July this year, when a witness provided new information. Police then released a composite sketch and surveillance video of the suspect for the first time. Police said surveillance footage showed a man in the area one day before the homicide, walking along the same route investigators believe he used the next day during the shooting. Investigators believe this behaviour may have been part of scouting and familiarizing himself with the scene. Police also said the suspect is left-handed and has a noticeable walking gait.
The information released today moves the investigation another step forward.
Police said another shooting happened in the same parking lot on March 10, 2023. In that case, a man was about to enter a white Toyota van when a suspect emerged from a black SUV and fired several shots at him. Based on newly obtained surveillance footage, police now believe the shooter in that case may be the same suspect who killed Wang.
Investigators have also obtained information that the suspect may use the name “Jay,” but they have not released his real identity and have not announced any arrest.
It has now been nearly four years since Wang was killed. Police are again releasing details about the case in the hope that anyone who has seen the suspect, knows someone named “Jay,” or has information about either shooting will come forward.
