TORONTO, September 22, 2026 – A shooting near Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East in Scarborough on September 21 left a man and a woman in their 70s dead. The case has been turned over to the Toronto Police homicide unit.
Police said they received reports of a shooting shortly after 12:30 p.m. and found two injured people near Providence Healthcare when officers arrived. Both had gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police initially believe the two people were a married couple, and that the woman was a patient at Providence Healthcare at the time. Their identities have not yet been released, as police are still notifying family members.
After the incident, an area near the Providence Healthcare parking lot was blocked off by police. Investigators found a firearm at the scene. No arrests have been made. Police said there is no outstanding suspect and no ongoing risk to public safety.
Police did not confirm that day whether the case involved a murder-suicide. Senior officer Scott Shutt, who was working at the scene, said the investigation is continuing and that police cannot determine the nature of the case at this stage.
The area around Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East includes a hospital, residential buildings and public transit facilities. Police are continuing to investigate how the shooting happened and are awaiting further confirmation of the two victims’ causes of death.
