January 29, 2026 — A high-level forum titled “Canada–China Relations 2026: A New Starting Point, A New Era” was held in the Greater Toronto Area, bringing together policymakers, diplomats, municipal leaders, business representatives, and community stakeholders to discuss the future direction of Canada–China relations.

The forum was co-hosted by Canadian Senator Victor Oh and Chinese Ambassador to Canada Wang Di, with a focus on dialogue, economic cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges in a changing global environment.

Also in attendance were several senior municipal leaders from the Greater Toronto Area, including Richmond Hill Mayor David West, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, underscoring the role of local governments in supporting international engagement and economic development. Representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Canada and the Consulate General of China in Toronto were also present. The forum received support from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Canada).

In his opening remarks, Senator Oh emphasized the importance of trade diversification for Canada, noting that a significant share of Canadian exports remains concentrated in a single market. He said strengthening economic ties with China—Canada’s second-largest trading partner—would be an important component of Canada’s long-term economic resilience.
Oh also highlighted the importance of coordination between federal and provincial governments, particularly in Ontario, where advanced manufacturing and the automotive sector play a central role in the economy. He noted that the global transition toward clean energy presents both challenges and opportunities for Canada’s industrial future.
Pointing to clean energy and electric vehicles as a key area of potential cooperation, Oh referenced his visit to China in October 2025, during which he toured facilities operated by leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. He encouraged Chinese companies to consider investing in Ontario, citing the province’s skilled workforce, established manufacturing base, and access to international trade agreements.

Ambassador Wang Di delivered the keynote address, offering an overview of recent developments in Canada–China relations, including the outcomes of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit to China. Wang described the visit as an important step toward stabilizing and advancing bilateral relations, noting that the two sides reached a series of understandings on economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and global governance issues.
According to Wang, both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and practical cooperation, with the aim of delivering tangible benefits to their respective populations. He also highlighted the importance of people-to-people exchanges, cultural cooperation, and sub-national engagement in strengthening the broader foundation of bilateral relations.

Participants at the forum noted that, amid global economic uncertainty and geopolitical change, sustained communication and pragmatic cooperation between Canada and China remain in the shared interest of both countries. Several speakers stressed that forums such as this play an important role in fostering understanding, rebuilding trust, and encouraging constructive engagement across government, business, and civil society.

The forum concluded with a shared view that Canada–China relations are entering a new phase, one that will require continued dialogue, cooperation, and participation from multiple levels of society to ensure stability and long-term progress.(LJI by Rita)
