Chinese Canadian Conservative Association (CCCA) Advocates for Stronger Democracy and Community Engagement

CCTVNEWS】On April 16, 2025, the Chinese Canadian Conservative Association of Ontario (CCCA) held a press conference. The Chinese Canadian Conservative Association (CCCA) remains committed to the values of democracy, unity, and inclusion that are at the heart of Canada’s multicultural society. However, we are deeply concerned by the recent trend of political candidates being appointed without consultation from community groups or even party members themselves, particularly within the Conservative and Liberal parties.

For the past two years, CCCA has actively reached out to the leadership of the Conservative Party to voice our concerns and engage in constructive dialogue about the importance of community involvement in the political process. Unfortunately, our efforts have been met with silence. This situation has become increasingly frustrating, particularly given that both parties have recently handpicked candidates who, unfortunately, are often unfamiliar with the local issues that affect communities like Markham. Despite the presence of many qualified, experienced, engaged individuals, and elected councillors within our community—many of whom are affluent visible minorities with a keen interest in serving their country—these voices have been pushed aside in favor of candidates chosen without proper consultation.

This practice undermines the very foundation of Canadian democracy. By appointing their own candidates, political parties are depriving their members of their right to actively participate in the selection of their leaders. The democratic process is not just about casting votes at election time—it is about having a say in who represents us, and in ensuring that candidates are accountable to the people they aim to serve.

Political party members pay fees, participate in campaigns, and contribute to the party’s success. They must be empowered to have a meaningful voice in selecting candidates who share their values and vision for the future of Canada. It is essential that these candidates not only campaign but also engage directly with party members, answer tough questions, and demonstrate their commitment to transparency, accountability, and a future that reflects the values of all Canadians.

At CCCA, we strongly believe that all political candidates must be accountable to the people they represent, and not just appointed by a small group within the party. Our members deserve the right to be actively involved in the democratic process, from selecting candidates to influencing policies.

Today, at this conference, we urge all Canadians to vote responsibly and thoughtfully. Do not support parties or candidates that seek to divide, attack, or undermine vital international relationships, especially with countries like India and China—partners of immense global importance. We encourage voters to support candidates who have the courage to stand up for Canada, engage in meaningful dialogue on the world stage, and work to strengthen relationships with nations that are critical to our shared future, such as India, China, and ASEAN countries, which collectively account for nearly half of the world’s population.

It is time for a change. It is time to ensure that our democratic process reflects the values of inclusion, transparency, and respect for all Canadians. Let us build a brighter, more united future for our great country—together.
