Man Dies After Being Struck by Transport Truck on Highway 404 Near Finch

TORONTO, August 10, 2026 – A fatal collision occurred on Highway 404 in Toronto over the weekend. A man was struck by a transport truck on the southbound lanes of Highway 404 near Finch Avenue East early on August 8 and was pronounced dead at the scene. Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to investigate what happened and believe more than one vehicle may have been involved.

The collision happened at about 6 a.m. on Saturday. Police initially received a report of a person walking near Highway 404. Emergency crews later responded to a collision in the southbound lanes near Finch Avenue. York Region paramedics arrived at the scene and confirmed the pedestrian had died.

Police have not released the man’s name and have not explained why he was on the highway early in the morning. Investigators have confirmed that a transport truck struck the man, but based on the information currently available, police suspect he may also have been struck by other passing vehicles.

That is why police are specifically asking the public for information.

OPP is urging drivers who were travelling southbound on Highway 404 near Finch Avenue at around 6 a.m. on August 8 to check their vehicles. Anyone who notices unexplained damage, or believes their vehicle may have been connected to the incident, should contact police as soon as possible.

Police are also seeking dashcam footage from vehicles that passed through the area at the time. Even if a driver did not see the full collision, footage showing a pedestrian on the highway, traffic conditions, or the scene before or after the incident may help investigators reconstruct the timeline.

At this stage, there is no information indicating that police have laid criminal charges against any driver. Police have also said they do not currently suspect the incident involved intentional harm. The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation.

After the crash, all southbound lanes of Highway 404 near Finch Avenue were closed while police examined the scene. OPP advised drivers that morning that the closure was expected to last several hours and could continue into the afternoon, and asked motorists to use alternate routes.

Highway 404 is a major north-south route connecting Toronto and York Region, and the area near Finch carries heavy traffic every day. Although the incident occurred early in the morning, the fact that police are asking many drivers to inspect their vehicles shows investigators are still trying to determine whether more vehicles were involved and the full sequence of impacts.

Anyone who was in the area at around 6 a.m. that morning, witnessed the incident, or has relevant dashcam footage can contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Police continue to investigate why the man was on the highway and the full circumstances of the fatal collision.(LJI by Yuanyuan)
