Markham’s 16th Avenue to Close for 10 Hours Tonight, Drivers Must Detour

TORONTO, October 26, 2026 – York Region is reminding drivers that a section of 16th Avenue in Markham will be fully closed starting at 8 p.m. tonight, October 26, for repair work on the Rouge River Bridge. The closure is expected to last 10 hours, until 6 a.m. on October 27.

The closure will affect 16th Avenue between Cachet Woods Court and Woodbine Avenue. During construction, regular traffic will not be permitted through the affected section, and drivers will need to follow posted signs and use alternative routes.

Access to properties along the affected section will be maintained. Residents living near the closure or those needing to reach local properties will be able to enter and exit by following directions from construction personnel and on-site signage.

The overnight work is part of the ongoing 16th Avenue road widening and improvement project. York Region is currently carrying out improvements along 16th Avenue between Leslie Street and Warden Avenue, including bridge repairs and upgrades to related transportation infrastructure.

16th Avenue is a commonly used east-west route in Markham, and the area near Woodbine Avenue typically experiences heavy traffic. Drivers planning to travel through the area tonight are advised to take alternative routes in advance and allow extra time for detours.

If weather or construction conditions affect the scheduled work, tonight’s closure may be postponed. York Region has designated a backup construction window from 8 p.m. on October 27 to 6 a.m. on October 28.

Construction schedules remain subject to change depending on site conditions. Residents planning to travel along 16th Avenue, Woodbine Avenue or through nearby neighbourhoods tonight are encouraged to check the latest road closure notices and follow posted traffic signs before leaving.
