TORONTO, September 10, 2026 – Ontario’s September Ontario Trillium Benefit, or OTB, is being paid on September 10. According to the Canada Revenue Agency’s payment schedule, eligible residents who chose monthly payments will receive this month’s amount by direct deposit or cheque.
The Ontario Trillium Benefit combines the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Ontario Sales Tax Credit and the Northern Ontario Energy Credit. It mainly supports eligible low- and moderate-income residents, renters, homeowners and some seniors. Benefit amounts for the July 2026 to June 2027 benefit year are calculated based on residents’ 2025 income tax and benefit return information.
For eligible residents whose 2025 tax return was assessed before June 19 this year, monthly payments generally began in July. If a return was assessed after June 19, the first OTB payment is usually issued four to eight weeks after the return is processed, and may include amounts the person was eligible for but had not yet received.
How the OTB is paid also depends on the total annual amount. If the annual amount is $500 or less, it was generally paid as a lump sum in the first payment month. If the amount is more than $500 and the resident chose to receive it as a single payment when filing taxes, the full annual amount will be paid on June 10, 2027.
Renters and homeowners claiming some housing- and energy-related credits must also complete the ON-BEN form as part of their tax return. Late filing, incomplete information, or a return that has not yet been fully processed by the CRA may affect when the OTB payment arrives.
The CRA advises residents who do not receive a payment on the scheduled date to wait 10 business days before contacting the agency.
Residents can use CRA My Account to check their OTB eligibility, payment amount and next payment date. Those who have not yet filed their 2025 tax return should do so as soon as possible. The OTB and many other income-tested government benefits are calculated based on annual tax return information.（LJI by Yuanyuan）
