Paul Chiang Launches Re-Election Campaign with Firm Support from Chinese Community Leaders

MARKHAM, ON — Member of Parliament Paul Chiang officially launched his re-election campaign this week and held a roundtable event with Chinese business and community leaders, where he outlined his record of results and vision for Markham–Unionville.

The event brought together a large number of respected figures from across the Chinese-Canadian community in Markham, who voiced their firm support for Chiang’s continued leadership. Attendees highlighted Chiang’s consistent presence in the riding and his history of meaningful engagement with Chinese residents, organizations, and businesses. They clearly stated that they believe Paul Chiang is the best choice to represent Markham–Unionville as Member of Parliament.

The Chinese community’s strong support for Chiang does not come as a surprise. Chiang has lived in Markham for over 36 years with his wife Monica, where they raised their three children. Before entering politics, he served 28 years with York Regional Police, including in the Diversity and Cultural Resources Unit, where he worked to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and diverse communities.
Since being elected in 2021, Chiang has delivered a number of key results for Markham–Unionville residents, including:

● Securing $59 million in federal housing investments to accelerate the construction of 6,630 homes
● Supporting the Canada Dental Care Plan, which has enabled more than 15,000 residents to access affordable dental services; supporting the National $10-a-day Early Learning and Child Care program, which has already reduced families’ child care cost by 50% on average, and up to $10,440 saving per child
● Focused on community safety, initiated Community Safety and Crime Prevention Townhall series with local Police Service
● Working with local and federal partners to reduce auto thefts in the York Region by 31% over the past year
● Spearheading national gun control legislation and increased funding for police to help keep communities safe

Chiang has also served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Diversity and Inclusion, where he hosted the Government of Canada’s official Asian Heritage Month celebrations and worked closely with Chinese-Canadian leaders on community engagement and anti-racism efforts.
His campaign launch comes as Canada faces new economic challenges, including unjustified tariffs from the United States. Chiang emphasized the importance of strong leadership and experience of Liberal Leader Mark Carney, a globally respected economist and former Governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, for his steady approach to economic management.
Under Mark Carney’s leadership, the Liberal team has already announced a series of measures to support Canadians, including:

A middle-class income tax cut that will save families money every year
● Eliminating the consumer carbon tax and capital gains tax increases
● Removing the GST on homes for many first-time buyers
● Providing support for Canadian businesses and workers affected by American tariffs

Chiang contrasted his approach with that of the Conservative Party, which recently forced an outside candidate with no roots to the community to be parachuted into the riding. He expressed concern about Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s proposals to cancel key programs like the Housing Accelerator Fund that is building over 6,600 new homes in Markham, and the Canada Dental Care Plan that is already benefiting thousands of Markham–Unionville residents. Chiang highlighted that while Mark Carney is a respected economist with proven experience strengthening Canada’s economy, Pierre Poilievre never held an adult job outside of politics.
Chiang’s re-election campaign will focus on building on the progress of the past four years — with an emphasis on affordability, public safety, and local economic growth. (LJI by Rudy)
