Toronto Man Arrested in Alleged Hate-Motivated Assault After Anti-Immigrant Remarks

TORONTO, October 15, 2026 – Toronto police said on October 14 that a 43-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a man who was working near Danforth Avenue and Logan Avenue while making anti-immigrant and anti-South Asian remarks. Police are investigating the incident as a suspected hate-motivated offence.

The incident happened on October 13. Police said the victim was working in the area when a man approached him and made the remarks. A confrontation followed, and the victim was assaulted.

The victim later called 911. When officers arrived, the suspect was still nearby and was arrested.

Police identified the accused as 43-year-old Toronto resident Christopher Lawson. He has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of failing to comply with probation. Police said the assault with a weapon charge is alleged to have been hate-motivated. None of the charges have been proven in court.

The case has been referred to the Toronto Police Service Hate Crime Unit. Police have not said what type of weapon was allegedly involved and have not released details about the victim’s injuries. No deaths were reported.

Under Canadian criminal law, hate motivation is generally not laid as a separate criminal charge. However, if an assault or other offence is found to have been motivated by bias, prejudice or hate, a judge may consider that factor as an aggravating circumstance at sentencing following a conviction.

Toronto police have continued to treat hate crime as a priority area of investigation. Incidents involving alleged attacks, threats or property damage linked to factors such as race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation may be referred to specialized investigators.

Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact investigators.
