TORONTO, June 17, 2026 – As FIFA World Cup group-stage matches take place in Toronto, the city and Metrolinx have recently updated public transit arrangements for the tournament period. From June 10 to July 5, GO Transit and UP Express will increase service to help fans travel to and from Toronto Stadium, while also helping local residents, commuters and travellers avoid crowding and traffic pressure around match days.

City of Toronto information shows that around Toronto match days, the Lakeshore West Line may offer up to six trains per hour between Exhibition GO and Union Station. GO Bus Route 12 to Niagara Falls will also see added weekday and weekend service during the tournament, supporting regional travellers coming to and from the Greater Toronto Area. Metrolinx also said GO Transit and UP Express will provide additional service, including some late-night trips, giving passengers more options to return home after evening matches and events.
World Cup transit arrangements do not only affect ticket holders. Residents, workers, businesses and travellers around Exhibition Place, Liberty Village, Fort York, Union Station, the waterfront and airport routes may all experience changes in crowd flow. Around match days, driving into the stadium area may not be the most convenient option, and parking, temporary road management, pedestrian traffic and public transit lineups should all be considered in advance.
Fans going to the stadium can consider taking GO Train to Exhibition GO and then walking to Toronto Stadium. Fans living outside downtown can first check the Lakeshore West, Lakeshore East and other connecting routes before deciding whether to transfer through Union Station. Travellers heading from Pearson Airport or nearby airport hotels to downtown should also watch for extended or increased UP Express service, instead of estimating travel time based on a regular weekend trip.
Commuters should pay attention to the overlap between match days and regular workdays. When matches begin in the afternoon or evening, pre-match crowds may meet the evening rush hour, making Union Station, Exhibition GO and the waterfront area busier. Residents living near the stadium who need to pick up children, go shopping, arrange food delivery or schedule repair services should allow extra time and avoid peak entry and exit periods where possible.
Businesses and restaurants should also prepare ahead of time. Tournament crowds may bring more customer traffic, but they can also change employee commuting, delivery routes and when customers arrive. Businesses near the stadium, transit stations and major pedestrian routes can monitor the match schedule and public transit arrangements in advance, and adjust staffing and inventory as needed.
The city and Metrolinx remind residents to use official trip-planning tools to check the latest schedules. Third-party map apps may not update quickly during major events, especially for extra trips, late-night service or road changes. Whether travelling to a match, going to work, picking up family members or heading to the airport, checking GO, TTC, UP Express and road information before match day is more reliable than changing plans at the last minute.(LJI by Yuanyuan)
