York Region Curbside Giveaway Days Begin June 20 in Several Cities

TORONTO, June 11, 2026 – Curbside Giveaway Days are being held across several York Region municipalities. York Region information shows that Markham’s next giveaway day will be June 20, Vaughan’s will take place from June 20 to 21, and Richmond Hill’s will be held on June 27. Residents may place reusable items at the curb on the designated dates and clearly mark them with a “FREE” sign.

The event has practical value for Chinese families, newcomer tenants, low-income households, students, residents preparing to move, and those clearing out unwanted items. Many families have furniture, small appliances, books, toys and household items that are still usable but no longer needed during seasonal cleaning, moving or when children outgrow items. Curbside Giveaway Days provide a reuse channel and allow families in need to pick up usable items for free.

However, Curbside Giveaway Days are not free garbage collection days. York Region reminds residents to take only items marked “FREE,” and to ask the owner first if there is any uncertainty. Items that are not taken should be brought back inside before the specified time. The region’s main page also reminds residents that items placed at the curb should be in good condition, reusable or repairable, such as books, electronics, furniture, small appliances, kitchenware, sports equipment, bicycles, tools and gardening equipment.

Residents should pay special attention to what cannot be placed at the curb. Items that are not reusable, may have pests such as bedbugs, cockroaches or fleas, are visibly mouldy, or are unsafe should not be left out. York Region also reminds residents that items not taken cannot simply be left at the curb or in public spaces. Illegal dumping may be reported and may result in penalties.

For newcomer tenants and families preparing to move, a common misunderstanding is treating Curbside Giveaway Days as large-item garbage pickup, assuming that furniture, mattresses or broken appliances can be left outside even if no one takes them. Residents picking up items should also check whether they are clean, complete and safe, especially children’s products, upholstered furniture, appliances and mattresses. Free items should not be taken home without basic inspection.

York Region also reminds residents to keep items they do not want taken away from the curb, not to enter someone else’s lawn or garden when picking up items, and not to block driveways, traffic or park illegally. Chinese families planning to participate should first confirm the specific date and time in their municipality, clearly label items with “FREE,” and bring back any unclaimed items after the event ends. The purpose of Curbside Giveaway Days is not to shift unwanted burdens onto neighbours, but to help usable items continue to serve a purpose in a safe, clear and rule-abiding way.(LJI by Yuanyuan)
