TORONTO, October 29, 2026 – The 29th Jean Lumb Awards ceremony will take place at the University of Toronto on November 1, recognizing 19 outstanding high school and university students of Chinese heritage from Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.

According to an announcement released by the Jean Lumb Foundation on October 28, the ceremony will be held on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Great Hall of Hart House at the University of Toronto.
A record 19 students will receive awards this year. Nine recipients are from Ontario, representing Markham, Oakville, Ottawa, Windsor and Toronto. Another eight are from British Columbia, including Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Abbotsford, Richmond and Port Moody. Alberta and Manitoba each have one recipient, from Calgary and Winnipeg, respectively.
First presented in 1998, the Jean Lumb Awards are named in honour of Chinese Canadian community pioneer Jean Lumb. The awards recognize young people of Chinese heritage who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics, the arts, athletics, community service, leadership and innovation.
Jean Lumb was an important figure in Chinese Canadian history and the first Chinese Canadian woman to receive the Order of Canada. She was actively involved in Chinese Canadian community affairs, cultural exchanges and social services throughout her life.
The Jean Lumb Foundation was established in 2006 and registered as a charitable foundation in 2008. It continues to support Chinese Canadian students through scholarships and awards.
As the awards have expanded nationwide, recipients are no longer limited to Toronto and Ontario. Recognition has also expanded beyond high school students to include eligible university students.
This year’s ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. on November 1 at the Great Hall, Hart House, University of Toronto, located at 7 Hart House Circle, Toronto.
