Chinese Consulate General in Toronto Hosts Chinese New Year Reception

Consul General Luo Weidong Delivers Remarks

CCTVmedium reports: On February 6, 2026, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto hosted a Lunar New Year reception ahead of the Year of the Horse. Approximately 500–600 guests attended, including representatives from local Chinese community organizations, and officials from Canada’s federal, provincial, and municipal governments, along with friends from various sectors.

Consul General Luo Weidong delivered New Year remarks, extending holiday greetings to guests and to the Chinese community in the consular district, and expressing appreciation for longstanding support for Canada–China relations, people-to-people exchanges, and the Consulate’s work.

He reviewed key developments in 2025, noting progress in China’s economic and social development as well as signs of improvement in Canada–China relations.

Luo also emphasized the importance of mutual respect, trust-building, and expanded cooperation and exchanges, encouraging continued bridge-building by communities, organizations, and individuals across the region.

MP Jean Yip conveyed Lunar New Year greetings and best wishes for further dialogue and cooperation in the year ahead.

Former Senator Victor Oh also delivered remarks, highlighting recent momentum in Canada–China engagement, including continued dialogue across areas such as energy, agriculture, technology, and culture. He encouraged deeper cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges, particularly among youth, and expressed hopes for practical cooperation to translate into tangible outcomes.

Before the reception, guests viewed a China-themed photo exhibition showcasing China’s development and cultural landscapes. On site, cultural displays featuring calligraphy, painting, and traditional dough figurines offered guests an interactive experience of Chinese heritage. The reception also included cultural performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Attendees included elected officials and community leaders such as MP Rob Oliphant, MP Jean Yip, former Senator Victor Oh, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Richmond Hill Mayor David West, and other regional and municipal representatives.(LJI by Rita)
