TORONTO, September 9, 2026 – Markham Ward 6 councillor candidate Scott Xie, also known as Xie Shaoguo, held a campaign launch event in Markham on September 5, officially announcing his run in the 2026 municipal election. He also introduced a campaign platform centred on “Y.O.U.,” covering resident communication, municipal services, traffic safety, community development and government transparency.
The event was held at 200 Town Centre Blvd., with nearly 100 residents, community members and volunteers in attendance. Markham Regional Councillor Alan Ho and representatives from several community organizations also spoke at the event.
Xie immigrated to Canada from Guangzhou in 2008 and has lived in Markham’s Ward 6 since then. He attended Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School, later graduated from York University with a degree in urban studies, and has worked in local manufacturing and small business sectors. In recent years, he has served as administrative assistant to Alan Ho, helping handle residents’ cases, community events, and municipal and York Region matters.
At the launch, Xie said that through his past work in constituent services, he had dealt with issues including roads and traffic facilities, community safety, seniors’ services, business licences, and communication between residents and government departments. He said he hopes to use that experience as the foundation for his campaign.
The “Y.O.U.” platform announced at the event has three parts.
“Y” stands for Young Vision, Proven Experience. Xie proposed creating more direct communication channels with residents, including a constituent hotline, community meet-and-greet events and weekly electronic newsletters. He also plans to create an online Ward 6 project tracking platform so residents can check the progress of road, traffic and infrastructure projects.
“O” stands for Optimized Municipal Services. Related proposals include keeping property tax increases low, reviewing winter snow-clearing standards, and re-examining some municipal bylaws connected to residents’ daily lives. On issues such as overnight parking, he said the City should strengthen rule explanations and resident education.
“U” stands for Unwavering Commitment to Results, focusing on community safety, noise management and consultation on development projects. Xie said he hopes to strengthen cooperation with York Regional Police and neighbourhood watch groups, while also pushing to update noise bylaws and requiring larger development projects to include more resident participation at earlier planning stages.
In recent years, Ward 6 has continued to see residential and infrastructure projects move forward. Xie said future housing development should also consider the capacity of roads, public transit, parks and other community facilities. He said residents should be able to learn about and participate in discussions earlier, before projects reach a more advanced stage.
Markham Ward 6 includes communities such as Angus Glen, Berczy Village, parts of Dickson Hill and Wismer Commons. The area generally extends north to Stouffville, east to Markham Road, west to Warden Avenue, with parts of the southern boundary along 16th Avenue and Bur Oak Avenue.
The voting period for the 2026 Markham municipal election will run from October 16 to 26.（LJI by Yuanyuan）
