Canada Wutai Shan to Host First Exoteric-Esoteric Dharma Assembly in June; Chinese Buddhist Communities Can Watch Cross-Tradition Cultural Exchange and Transportation Arrangements

TORONTO, May 23, 2026 – Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Canada will hold Canada’s first Exoteric-Esoteric Dharma Assembly and Yellow Jambhala Empowerment Dharma Assembly on June 27, 2026. The event is co-hosted by Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Canada and Thrangu Monastery Canada, and will take place on the third floor of the Mahavira Hall at Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Cavan-Monaghan, Ontario, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The public can attend for free without registration. For Chinese Buddhist communities in the GTA, seniors, newcomer families and residents interested in Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist culture, the event is not only a religious ceremony, but also an opportunity to participate in cross-tradition cultural exchange locally in Canada. However, because the venue is far from downtown Toronto and the event will last most of the day, participants should confirm transportation, shuttle bus, food and personal health arrangements in advance.

The organizers said Mount Wutai has long been regarded as an important Buddhist sacred site where exoteric and esoteric traditions coexist, and where Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions have historically practised and spread Buddhist teachings together. This event, jointly organized for the first time by Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden in Canada and Thrangu Monastery Canada, represents cultural and religious exchange between Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions in Canada, while also offering prayers for world peace and the well-being of all beings.

The event falls on the auspicious birthday of Wuye Caishen, the Wealth Deity associated with Mount Wutai. The organizers have invited Dungse Pema Rinpoche, abbot of Thrangu Monastery Canada, to preside over the ceremony and bestow the Yellow Jambhala empowerment. In Buddhist belief, Yellow Jambhala symbolizes merit, wealth, wisdom and the protection of the Dharma. For Buddhist practitioners, the focus of the ceremony is to pray for the growth of merit and wisdom, auspiciousness and peace. For the wider community, this type of event also reflects exchange and coexistence between Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions within Canada’s Chinese religious and cultural spaces.

Large religious and cultural events like this are especially meaningful for Chinese seniors and newcomer Buddhist communities. Many seniors rely on family members or group transportation to attend religious activities, while some newcomers also hope to connect with familiar languages, rituals and community support through temple events. Free admission lowers the barrier to participation, but the venue is located at 708 Ski Hill Road in Cavan-Monaghan, which requires a considerable drive from the Greater Toronto Area. Residents who do not drive, have mobility needs or require caregiving support should confirm shuttle bus options, meeting times, return arrangements and on-site access in advance.

Free admission does not mean no preparation is needed. Since the event runs from morning to evening, seniors and participants with chronic health conditions should prepare regular medications, water, simple food and necessary rest arrangements. If travelling in a group, participants should also agree on meeting points and contact methods ahead of time. Residents who need shuttle bus transportation can call 905-886-6481 to ask about registration and travel arrangements.

From a community culture perspective, the significance of this Dharma assembly is not limited to a single religious ceremony. It offers Chinese Buddhist communities in Canada a public space for participation across traditions and temples. Residents interested in attending should confirm transportation, timing and personal health arrangements in advance. Those unfamiliar with the location or language instructions can ask family members or companions to help check details, reducing inconvenience during long-distance travel, waiting periods and on-site communication.(LJI by Yuanyuan)
