Ontario Chinese Heritage Month Act Passes Third Reading

Set to Receive Royal Assent and Become Law

(Wednesday, December 11th, 2024 – Scarborough-Agincourt, Ontario) Bill 183, the Chinese Heritage Month Act, 2024, co-sponsored by MPP Aris Babikian (Scarborough-Agincourt) and MPP Vincent Ke (Don Valley North), successfully passed its Third Reading in the Ontario Legislature today. The bill has been submitted to the Lieutenant Governor for Royal Assent and is expected to officially become law soon.

By designating February as Chinese Heritage Month in Ontario, this initiative provides an opportunity for all Ontarians to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich culture and traditions of Chinese Canadians. It will also foster inter-cultural dialogue and understanding, further enriching Ontario’s multicultural society.

“From the earliest pioneers who helped build our nation’s transcontinental railway to today’s trailblazers in technology, business, and the arts, the Chinese community has left an indelible mark on our province,” MPP Aris Babikian stated. “Designating February as Chinese Heritage Month in Ontario carries profound significance not only for the Chinese Canadian community but also for all Ontarians. I am proud and honoured to co-sponsor Bill 183. I wish the Chinese community happiness, prosperity, and good health in the Year of the Snake!”

MPP Aris Babikian praised the efforts and selfless contributions of the Chinese Canadian community, while expressing gratitude for the leadership of Premier Doug Ford, the support of his fellow MPPs, and the broader community. This initiative recognizes the contributions and resilience of the Chinese Canadian community, enriching Ontario’s multicultural and inclusive society. It brings new vitality and creativity to the province. Ontario is the first federal or provincial jurisdiction to pass the Act honouring and celebrating the Chinese Canadian community.
