Chinese Senior Groups Can Apply for Federal Funding by July 14

TORONTO, June 3, 2026 – The federal government opened a new round of community project applications under the New Horizons for Seniors Program on June 2. Eligible non-profit organizations, municipal governments and Indigenous organizations can apply for up to $50,000 in funding for local seniors’ projects lasting up to one year. The application deadline is July 14 at 3 p.m. Chinese senior service organizations, seniors’ activity centres and small non-profit teams that plan to apply for funding for seniors’ activities, volunteer services or reducing social isolation should review eligibility, budgets and project details as early as possible.

The program focuses on community projects that are led, planned or carried out with the participation of seniors. The federal government says the community-based stream is intended to improve seniors’ quality of life and support local social participation. For Chinese communities, possible projects may include anti-fraud workshops, digital skills training, health information sessions, cultural activities, volunteer training, community companionship services and necessary equipment upgrades.

However, applying for funding does not mean a project will automatically be approved, nor does it mean the money can be used for an organization’s regular operating expenses. Applicants need to explain the specific issue the project aims to address, the target group, implementation timeline, budget plan, and how seniors will participate in the project’s design or delivery. Federal application information shows that the maximum project request is $50,000. Applications involving multiple locations or organizational structures should also pay attention to business numbers and governance requirements.

For small Chinese community service organizations, common challenges during the application process may include English-language forms, budget explanations, project goal descriptions and online system use. Some organizations may already have stable activities and volunteer networks, but if they cannot clearly explain the project goals, spending purposes and seniors’ participation, the completeness of the application may still be affected.

Organizations interested in applying should prepare organizational information, project plans, budget tables, implementation timelines and partner details before the deadline. Teams unfamiliar with the English application process can ask experienced community workers, financial staff or partner organizations for help early, instead of discovering close to the deadline that accounts, documents or budget details are still incomplete.(LJI by Yuanyuan)
